Open source players ownCloud and VNC form strategic partnership

Zug, Switzerland, 29. Oktober 2020

The two leading open source software vendors ownCloud and VNC have agreed on a strategic partnership. By integrating their digital collaboration and communication platforms, they will create comprehensive open source solutions as a basis for digital sovereignty.

Within the framework of the new strategic cooperation, ownCloud, headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany, and VNC, headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, will coordinate their sales activities for existing and new customers. The intensive cooperation ranges from the pre- to the post-sales phase. By integrating the ownCloud storage platform and the VNClagoon communication platform, both partners also market scalable end-to-end solutions and services for the enterprise sector.

Companies thus have access to comprehensive open source offerings from European providers that focus on high functionality but also on uncompromising data protection. Companies and public authorities are therefore able to free themselves from the offers of the large US providers, some of which have glaring security risks and hardly comply with European data protection standards. The open source solutions from ownCloud and VNC, on the other hand, can be operated on-premise or in a secure European cloud, and grant companies complete digital sovereignty at all times.

„With VNC we have gained a partner for whom data security is also a top priority,“ emphasizes Tobias Gerlinger, CEO of ownCloud. „The integration of VNC’s solutions is fully in line with our best-of-breed strategy. It provides another comprehensive, scalable offering that allows companies to emancipate themselves from US providers and retain complete control over their data.“

„VNC and ownCloud both follow a strict open source approach and clearly differentiate themselves from proprietary software and public cloud providers that do not comply with European data protection guidelines with their solutions and service portfolio,“ explains VNC Managing Director and Board Member Andrea Wörrlein. „We anticipate considerable results from the cooperation and see ourselves in an excellent position in a dynamic market for communication and collaboration solutions, especially with regard to the increasingly important aspect of high data security.“

The open source software ownCloud is a content collaboration solution for the secure storage, processing and synchronization of data. It can be operated in its own data center or in a private cloud. In addition, with ownCloud.online a turnkey „Software as a Service“ offer is also available. The ownCloud solution is GDPR-compliant and offers a high level of data security, for example through functions such as two-factor authentication, password protection or file firewalls. Through well-documented APIs, users can connect the ownCloud platform quickly and easily to existing systems, processes or workflows.

VNClagoon from VNC is an integrated open source product suite for communication and collaboration in companies. The functional scope includes email, messenger, office management, project management, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management and video conferencing. The software can be promoted as a licensed product for on-premise operation, but is also available as cloud software through certified European providers.
